Axiom Space Unveils Innovative Artemis Spacesuit in Collaboration with Prada
Milan, Italy — At the International Astronautical Congress on October 16, Axiom Space showcased the latest iteration of the Artemis spacesuit, known as the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU), crafted in partnership with luxury brand Prada. This launch represents a significant milestone in the preparation for NASA’s Artemis 3 mission, which aims to return humans to the lunar surface by fall 2026.
“Today marks a significant step on the path towards returning humans to the surface of the moon,” stated Russell Ralston, executive vice president of extravehicular activity at Axiom Space, during the presentation. This newly unveiled suit, featuring a distinctive white outer layer designed for lunar conditions, reflects the advancements made from earlier prototypes that were primarily for demonstration purposes.
A Leap Forward in Spacesuit Technology
The AxEMU suit boasts enhanced mobility, increased redundancy, and advanced health monitoring systems, offering substantial improvements over the Apollo-era suits. “Certainly there’s a lot more mobility in this suit design,” Ralston elaborated, highlighting its evolution over the past two years.
The collaboration with Prada brings expertise in fabric technology and garment design to the development process, facilitating quick advancements. "With the partnership with Prada, we’ve been able to make a lot of really great progress very quickly," Ralston remarked. The new design incorporates materials that reflect sunlight and prevent lunar dust from infiltrating interior layers, a vital consideration for any moon mission.
Stability in Supply Chain
As Ralston pointed out, the journey to develop high-performance spacesuits comes with challenges, particularly in sourcing reliable materials. "If you look across all the different technologies that are needed within the suit … the supply chain has tended to be pretty unstable," he noted. Prada’s involvement has helped create more stability in the materials used, ensuring that the Axiom team can rely on prompt and effective responses to their needs. Lorenzo Bertelli, chief marketing officer of Prada Group, emphasized this cooperation, stating, “For Axiom, having a supplier that was able to address their needs very quickly and without a problem was super important.”
Design Features Reflecting Tradition and Innovation
A nod to NASA’s history is evident in the design of the suit, featuring a prominent red stripe, reminiscent of the mission commander’s suits from previous space missions. “It’s a super nice coincidence that after more than 20 years those two things came together,” said Bertelli, referring to Prada’s previous support of the Luna Rossa team in the America’s Cup yachting competition.
While this version is labeled as the “flight design,” the suit has not yet completed the critical design review process necessary to finalize production specifications. Ralston confirmed ongoing testing to ensure the suit meets all operational requirements, emphasizing, “We have gotten to a place where we have a design that we think is the right answer. But what you have to do is go qualify it.”
Expanding Horizons Beyond Lunar Missions
Notably, Ralston indicated that the AxEMU suit’s design is versatile enough to be adapted for various environments, including low Earth orbit missions, such as spacewalks from the International Space Station or Axiom’s future commercial space endeavors. “We have a single architecture of a suit, basically a single design,” he explained. “All we have to do to go from an Artemis mission to, say, a low Earth orbit mission, is change the boots.”
A Collaborative Effort
Both Axiom and Prada representatives expressed enthusiasm about their cooperative venture. Ralston articulated the necessity for partnerships with entities that excel in specific areas like fabric technology to enhance suit development efficiency. Bertelli, in turn, shared that there was no shortage of interest among Prada employees to contribute, stating, “I had a queue of people who wanted to work on this project. For them, it was something extraordinary.”
As the race towards lunar exploration accelerates, Axiom Space and Prada’s collaboration illustrates how cross-industry partnerships can drive innovation in even the most traditional sectors, like aerospace. With the AxEMU spacesuit set to play a crucial role in future lunar missions, both organizations are positioned at the forefront of modern space exploration.
