Viktor Axelsen failed to reach the quarter-finals of the All England 2023 after losing dramatically to Ng Tze Yong at the Utilita Arena Birmingham, Thursday (16/3).

Axelsen lost in three games 15-21, 21-9, 23-21. Axelsen made a number of mistakes which benefited Tze Yong from getting points.

Six consecutive points that Tze Yong got after a 15-15 draw made the Malaysian representative win 21-15 over Axelsen in the first game.

In the second game, the dominance of the game was held by Axselse. In the second game interval, Axelsen won 11-6. After getting resistance after the interval, Axelsen returned to the lead until 16-9.

The athlete who is now ranked 28th in the world continued to play calmly even though he was far behind from Axelsen in the second game.

Tze Yong played meticulously. His decision to return the ball from Axelsen was minimal in error. In the end Axelsen won 21-9 in the second game to force the match to continue into a rubber game.

In this match Tze Yong showed a slick defense. Axelsen’s several attacks either through straight or cross smashes were often returned to the Malaysian representative.

Tze Yong’s drop shot in returning Axelsen’s hard smash put him ahead 16-12.

Getting tough resistance from Tze Yong was enough to disturb the concentration of the world number one.

This lack of focus can be seen from Axelsen’s return, which was half-hearted and Tze Yong struck with a straight smash. Tze Yong won 18-15.

Axelsen’s position was further pressured after Tze Yong won 19-15 due to the return of the athlete from Denmark who was too wide.

Axelsen’s experience and quality allowed him to level the score at 19-19. At these critical points Axelsen lobbed the ball, forcing Tze Yong to make an error after his smash caught in the net. Axelsen turned ahead 20-19.

Axelsen failed to take advantage of the match point after his observations were wrong. Tze Yong forced the setting after the score was 20-20.

Axelsen’s long lob made Ng Tze Yong win 23-21 in the third game and qualify for the 2023 All England quarter-finals.
