Axel Springer Announces Significant Changes: Reduction of Regional Editions and Job Cuts by 2024

The number of regional editions is to be reduced from 18 to 12 and smaller locations are to be closed completely – by the end of the year. We are currently assuming that the major locations (Hamburg, Leipzig, Essen, Frankfurt and Munich) will remain in place, according to Axel Springer. There are changes in the Leipzig, Dresden, Chemnitz, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Nuremberg and Saarland editions.

The management level is also to be significantly streamlined. Cultural change is primarily a management issue, which also means that management levels should be streamlined, according to Springer. The new line-up under the Digital only goal formulated by Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner in February is to be implemented by January 1, 2024. Axel Springer announced the measures to the employees of Bild in Berlin on Monday in an e-mail that is available to kress. Employees are affected by the measures in a “low three-digit number”, as a spokesman for the picture says when asked by Kress.

According to information from Kress, there are around 200 jobs in editing, publishing and marketing. The most important things from the media – once a day: order the kressexpress now

The greater use of artificial intelligence also plays a role in the job cuts: “Unfortunately, we also have to part with colleagues who have tasks that are replaced by AI and/or processes in the digital world or who do not find themselves in this new line-up with their current skills,” says the email to the employees of Bild. At the same time, new reporter profiles at the regional desks and new or expanded departmental structures in news, politics, business, science and show also create opportunities for future-oriented journalism. “We would like to expressly encourage you to see opportunities for you here – also with targeted further training”, said the editor-in-chief and management of Bild in the quoted mail.

The group strives to avoid redundancies and to find socially acceptable solutions:

“We are aware that these decisions mean major changes for many colleagues. We are trying to avoid redundancies for operational reasons and to find socially acceptable solutions. We are now starting talks with the responsible general works council and would like to start the volunteer program agreed with the group works council in March 2023 for all Bild locations throughout Germany.” First of all, the Handelsblatt had reported on the new savings measures.
