The US actress Awkwafina (31) has become a subway announcer in New York. For a week, her voice will be heard on Line 7, which connects the boroughs of Queens and Manhattan, announced the New York City Transport Company MTA.
It is the first time that a well-known personality takes over the announcements. “We are looking for new and different ways to raise urgently needed money, and at the same time to surprise and delight our customers,” said MTA spokeswoman Sarah Meyer according to the announcement.
The Awkwafina announcements are part of an advertising campaign for the actress’ new series, “Nora from Queens”. Awkwafina, whose real name is Nora Lum, grew up in Queens, New York. She became famous with roles in Hollywood films such as “Ocean’s 8” or “Crazy Rich”. For her role in “The Farewell” she was the first Asian-American actress to win a Golden Globe.
Awkwafina doesn’t just announce the stations of subway line 7, she also comments on them: At the last stop before the train goes under the East River to Manhattan, she says something like: “The next stop is in Manhattan, we go underground, hold your breath! “(dpa)
