Awiti Alcaraz: The Joyful Globalization of Mexico

Paris, July 30 (EFE).- With‍ a Kenyan father,‍ a Mexican mother, and raised in London, Prisca Awiti Alcaraz has written herself ⁣into the history of ‌Mexican judo. Her silver medal in ⁤the -63 ⁣kg category at ‌the recent Games was a first for the country in this sport.

Awiti Alcaraz’s achievement is all the more remarkable given that ‍she almost gave up judo⁢ when ⁤she found her weight category too ⁤competitive in the UK. Instead, she embraced ⁤the opportunity to represent Mexico—a country with which she had ⁣little ‌familiarity beyond her mother’s heritage—and quickly obtained citizenship.

Since 2017, she has ‍worn Mexican colors on⁢ the ⁣international stage and achieved numerous accolades, including gold medals at the Pan American Games. Her favorite‍ technique, the Seoi-Otoshi throw, ‌has ‌served her well, as has her determination ⁢and role model older brother, also a successful judoka.

Beyond⁢ the tatami, ⁢Awiti Alcaraz advocates for Mexican women’s empowerment, recognizing that the country’s ‌culture is slowly evolving towards greater gender equality. She ‍notes with pride how ⁤some men are taking‌ on more equitable domestic⁢ roles.
