Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – A truce between Israel and Palestine in the Gaza Strip seems to have ended. The Israeli military reportedly attacked the compound which is suspected to be the military headquarters of Hamas, Wednesday (16/6/2021) early morning local time.
Israel claims it was a retaliatory strike for a balloon launch of ammunition from the region that set fire to fields in southern Israel. Launch ReutersThe balloon was launched by Hamas following Israel’s provocation through a nationalist march in East Jerusalem that angered Palestinians.
In a statement, the Israeli military even said it was ready for a new battle. “Ready for all scenarios, including new battles in the face of continued terrorist acts emanating from Gaza,” the military said.
Israeli airstrikes and Hamas air balloons marked the first major turmoil between Israel and Gaza since the May 21 ceasefire. The ceasefire ended 11 days of fighting between the two sides that killed 260 Palestinians in Gaza and 13 in Israel.
Meanwhile, quoting AFP, a Palestinian source said the Israeli air force targeted a site east of southern Gaza. A media photojournalist saw the explosion in the area.
The attack was the first by Israel under the new government of Prime Minister Naftali Bennett. It defeated Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been in power for 12 years, in elections in the Israeli parliament Sunday (13/6/2021).
Previously, the US and the United Nations had previously asked Israel to refrain from marching. But it did so with police mobilizing resources, blocking roads and firing stun grenades and bullets to dislodge Palestinians from the main route of the march.
Medics said 33 Palestinians were injured. Israeli police said two officers were injured and 17 people were arrested.
Hamas threatened retaliation for the march. The march itself was called “celebrating the anniversary of the reunification” of Jerusalem after Israel captured east Jerusalem from Jordan in 1967 and annexed it, a move not recognized by much of the international community.
