For the first time in history, “Las bubis también habla” will be presented in Querétaro, an event with a cause that combines stand-up with monologue. It is about four women who survived breast cancer, who tell their stories from the perspective of their breasts.
Ilian Olivares, a participant in the project and also a survivor, explained that the intention is to “bring to the audience, through awareness and fun, a message of female self-acceptance, and also a message of the importance of self-examination in order to prevent breast cancer in time.”
The event was a collaboration with the association Women United Against Breast Cancer (MUCCAM), whose purpose is to provide support to the more than 250 women who are part of it and suffer from the disease. Likewise, sponsorships and a fraction of the funds raised from the staging will be destined to this organization for the purchase of internal and external prostheses, as well as special bras for women who underwent mastectomies.
Verónica Mariaca, a member of MUCCAM and one of the surviving actresses, explained that it was “important to tell my story (to the audience), everything that my boobs went through,” referring to the name of the event and the point of view from the breasts. “I thought the idea was wonderful (…) I had never thought about the subject.”
According to Ilian Olivares, the idea for the project came from a leadership program in Tijuana, where they wanted to put together a monologue program. Since the “vagina monologues” already existed, the group of women thought of innovating with the “boobs monologues.” They asked themselves the question “what if your boobs could talk, what would they say?”
After conceiving the idea, they interviewed the women of MUCCAM, including Mariaca. They formed a partnership from that moment on and, until now, they have rehearsed the proposal via Zoom and obtained sponsorships from different brands, such as Huevos San Juan, the eyebrow tattoo artist Mariel Pérez, the Danzarte school, among others.
The event will take place this Friday, August 16, at the QBO entertainment center, next to the El Caserío restaurant. Admission is at 8:30 p.m. and tickets can be purchased in advance for 300 pesos. On the day of the event, they will be available at the box office for 400 pesos.
After the premiere, Olivares plans to take the project on tour “to as many places as possible,” as long as the cause is to help women with breast cancer.
