The painting by Stephanie von Dallwitz is intended to complement the gallery of honorary citizens in the House of Representatives. Friedländer, born in Berlin in 1921, had already been awarded honorary citizenship in 2018. The Jewish woman was arrested in April 1944 and shortly afterwards deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp. After the Second World War Friedländer moved to the USA and returned to her hometown Berlin in 2010. “Berlin appreciates its honorary citizen Margot Friedländer with great gratitude, who has honored the Senate and the House of Representatives in this way, aware of their great contribution to the memory of the Holocaust and the fate of Jewish people in our city and in Germany,” said Berlin’s Governing Mayor Michael Müller . According to the House of Representatives, there are currently 115 honorary citizens in Berlin. In addition to Friedländer, Bundestag President Wolfgang Schäuble and former Federal President Joachim Gauck are honorary citizens. – – .
