The poor conditions shown in the film are a reality for many Egyptians, researchers also say. About a third of Egypt’s 100 million inhabitants live below the poverty line. The most affected are women from the rural south of Egypt: the main character from “Feathers” therefore completely fits the description. Moreover, like the other characters, she is not played by a professional actress, but by a woman with no acting experience, herself from the Coptic community in southern Egypt.
