23 students successfully took part in the regional Mathematical Olympiad. At the beginning of February they received their respective awards from Mayor Josephine Gauselmann, Bernd Ormanns from Stadtsparkasse Mönchengladbach and Ilka Bowitz, regional coordinator of the State Association of Mathematics Competitions NRW eV, as well as prizes, some of which were donated by Stadtsparkasse. In addition, two students will travel this month (February 25) to the state round, which will take place this year at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences in Krefeld.
The supporting program for the award ceremony was designed by pupils from the Am Geroweiher high school.
The Mathematics Olympiad is a nationwide competition for schoolchildren from the third grade upwards, in which schoolchildren interested in mathematics have the opportunity to demonstrate their particular ability in the field of mathematics. The tasks require logical thinking, combination skills and creative use of mathematical methods.
Around 200,000 students take part nationwide every year.
This year, around 200 schoolchildren from 14 different schools (comprehensive schools, vocational colleges, grammar schools) took part in the first round in Mönchengladbach. Of these, around 70 students qualified for the second round, the city round.
On an afternoon in November, these 70 students spent several hours – entirely voluntarily – before the tricky math problems of the central exam.
