Only Granta sedans and liftbacks will receive automatic transmissions
AVTOVAZ has resumed production of the Lada Granta with four-speed Jatco automatic transmissions, which have been installed on the model since 2011 in parallel with the AMT robotic transmission. But this does not mean the resumption of supplies of Japanese gearboxes to Russia: the plant decided to complete the assembly of about 5,000 cars with automatic transmissions, which were brought into the country before the start of the SVO. As before, hydromechanics are combined with a 98-horsepower 1.6-liter engine. The stock of boxes is approximately enough for a year of production, and since there is no rush, AVTOVAZ set a fairly high price.
Thus, the minimum price for a sedan with such a gearbox is 1.177 million rubles. The Comfort Plus package immediately includes front airbags, ABS, air conditioning, audio system, heated seats, and 15-inch alloy wheels. For comparison: a similar Granta with manual transmission and steel wheels costs 176 thousand rubles less. It turns out that the surcharge for an automatic transmission is noticeably higher than for the recently released Lada Vesta CVT: there they ask for only 75 thousand for the combination of a CVT and a 1.8-liter engine. A liftback with an automatic transmission costs at least 1.248 million rubles.
The gearbox was developed about 40 years ago
The Jatco JF414E four-speed automatic transmission itself is old-fashioned and originates from a gearbox developed by Nissan back in the late 80s for the Sunny hatchback of those years. But it could boast of a real Japanese assembly; in addition, unlike CVTs and “robots”, hydromechanical boxes cause less anxiety among Russians.
However, the solution looks temporary in any case. In addition, part of the automatic “Grant” will be transferred to social services for the needs of people with disabilities, so that a limited number of such versions will appear on the public market. The long-term solution should be to install on the Granta the Chinese WLY CVT18 variator, which Vesta is already using. According to the site Аuto.mail.ru, it will not be combined with a 1.8-liter engine, but with the same 1.6-liter engine with a capacity of 98 hp. pp., as “Grants” with Jatco “automatic machines”. The CVT is known to Russians from the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro model with a 113-horsepower engine.
From April 1, new parallel import rules have been in effect in Russia, which exclude the supply of cars under gray schemes. At the same time, car sales in March 2024 turned out to be the best ever since the beginning of the SVO.
