AVTOVAZ Announces Plan for Mass Production of Gasoline and Electric Largus, Facing Production Delays

At the beginning of December, the head of AVTOVAZ, Maxim Sokolov, announced that the start of mass production of the gasoline and electric versions of Largus is planned for May next year. However, AVTOVAZ has already postponed the relaunch of the model several times.

Largus, built on the basis of the Renault/Dacia Logan MCV, had a high share of imported components and technologies, so in 2022–2023 AVTOVAZ had to re-solve the problem of its localization. Before the start of the SVO, Largus were produced in Tolyatti on the same line with related models Renault Logan, Sandero and Lada XRAY, which ensured high conveyor load: in 2021, VAZ assembled 74 thousand models on the B0 platform. But after Renault left, it turned out to be impossible to save Logan and Sandero; moreover, AVTOVAZ considered impractical production of XRAY. Therefore, the fate of Largus was in great doubt: it could not ensure the loading of the conveyor alone.

Then AVTOVAZ made a castling move: the updated Lada Vesta was restarted on the former B0 line of the Tolyatti plant, and Largus was sent to the Izhevsk AVTOVAZ plant so as not to close the enterprise. At first they talked about an electric version, but judging by the latest reports, petrol Largus will also remain. But everything together led to the delay of the project: the start was scheduled for the fall of 2022, then 2023, but now they are talking about the spring of 2024.

AVTOVAZ has a license to produce Largus, that is, from a legal point of view there should be no problems.
