Avtotor Amber: Russia’s First Domestic Electric Car Faces Ridicule as ‘Tesla Killer’

Russia has presented its first fully domestically built electric car: the ‘Avtotor Amber’. However, after a photo leaked, the car became the target of ridicule. Russians scornfully call him a ‘Tesla killer’. It looks a bit like a Fiat Multipla, considered by many to be the ugliest car in the world.

You would almost think that it is fake news spread from Ukraine. But the first ‘100% made in Russia’ electric car was presented in Kaliningrad, Russia. Avtotor is a major Russian car manufacturer. It was founded in 1996 and grew to become one of the largest manufacturers and assemblers of automobiles in the world.

BMW, Hyundai and Kia cars used to be assembled in the factory, until Western sanctions put a stop to this. In addition, they are also working on their own models.

50,000 per year

Inspired by the success of cheap Chinese electric cars, the factory set out to build a car made entirely from Russian parts. That has become the city car ‘Avtotor Amber’. It will go into production from 2025 and the goal is to build 50,000 per year.

After the first photos leaked, the car immediately became the target of ridicule. “It is hoped that the appearance will be different, otherwise no one will want to buy it,” Russian accounts report on Telegram. Others scornfully call the car a “Tesla killer”. The car is also being laughed at on Twitter. “Finally a worthy successor to the Fiat Multipla,” it sounds.
