AVS Secures Important 2-0 Victory Over Académico: Nenê Sets Scoring Record

* by Vítor Hugo Monteiro

Very important victory for AVS. The Avenses received Académico (from Viseu) and triumphed by 2-0. The leadership in the II League, belonging to Santa Clara, was once again three points away for Jorge Costa’s team.

The highly experienced Nenê scored for the 12th round in a row and reached 19 goals in the second tier.

The teams started in 4-2-3-1 and showed a lot of energy when it came to reacting to the loss. Until the first quarter of an hour, the viriatos showed a slight upward trend. André Clovis could have scored, if it weren’t for a huge interception by Edson Farias that took the bread out of his mouth to the advanced.

The rest of the first half was led by the home team. Those led by Jorge Costa began to retain the ball better, neutralized the visitors’ counterattacks better and created opportunities. Benny shot, with a slight deflection from Nenê, for a great save by Domen Grill.

Shortly afterwards, the Brazilian striker appeared again and headed wide, in a move where he could have done more.

While the devil rubs his eye

After the rest time ended, the match resumed just as in the first half. The game was very busy and both teams fought hard in the center of the field. The intensity remained high and Académico always kept an eye on possible quick attacks.

In the 63rd minute, when it was the Viseense team that was being stronger, the genius of John Mercado appeared. The Ecuadorian winger took advantage of a long pass from the defense and ran several meters with the ball under control. In a one-on-one with Domen Grill, he scored a beautiful shot with a shot. What class!

Shortly after, great moment for Nenê! The 40-year-old athlete took advantage of a great opening from Benny and scored the second goal of the game, reaching the mark of 12 consecutive games scoring goals, a record in the Portuguese second division.

Jorge Simão also tried to have a more offensive team, although this had no practical effect. AVS continued to manage the game as they pleased and didn’t give their opponent a chance to dream.

With this result, AVS reinforces second place and takes off from Nacional. Académico is in seventh place, just one point behind sixth place, Tondela.
