AvroTros will look back extensively on the last Eurovision period in the near future. “We will, like every year, evaluate and report back if there is news to report,” a spokesperson for the broadcaster said on Wednesday when asked.
Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper did not qualify for the final of the Eurovision Song Contest on Tuesday. Shortly afterwards, AvroTros announced that it was ‘incredibly proud’ of the duo. ,,We knew it would be difficult in this difficult first semi-final and it is of course a great pity that we did not manage to reach the final”, says AvroTros. “Mia & Dion put on a fantastic performance and we are and remain incredibly proud of what they have achieved.”
Recently there has been criticism of the way in which AvroTros chooses the Dutch entry internally. Many people want more openness and would like a return of the National Song Contest.
General director Eric van Stade, also a member of the selection committee, already announced last month that it is not inconceivable that the National Song Contest will return in the long term. There are regular discussions about this within AvroTros, he stated. “Of course we try to see if we are still doing well and whether we should change that from time to time,” Van Stade explained. “We talk about it regularly, but until now it seemed more sensible to continue on the path we have now taken.”
