Avoiding Eating in the Morning Does not Lose More Weight Page all

KOMPAS.com – One of the ways that many people often do lose weight is not eating in the morning and delaying it until noon.

In fact, this method has no effect body weight, especially in those who are overweight with pradiabetes or diabetes.

“We have long wondered whether delaying eating until noon affects how the body uses and stores energy,” says study author Nisa M. Maruthur, MD, MHS, professor of medicine, epidemiology and nursing at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore. .

“Most of the previous studies didn’t control for calorie counts, so it’s unclear whether people who ate earlier ate fewer calories. In this study, the only thing we changed was that eating time.”

Maruthur and colleagues followed 41 overweight adults in a 12-week study.

Launching Science Daily, most of the participants (90%) were black women with prediabetes or diabetes, and an average age of 59 years.

Twenty-one adults follow a time-restricted diet, limit eating to certain hours of the day, and eat 80% of their calories before 1pm.

The remaining 20 participants ate at the usual time during the 12-hour window, consuming half of their daily calories after 5 p.m., for the full 12 weeks.

All participants ate healthy, pre-prepared meals provided for the study.

Body weight and blood pressure measured at the start of the study; then at 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks.

Results of analysis of studies that have been reported in Scientific Sessions American Heart Association 2020 found that people in both groups lost weight and experienced a drop in blood pressure whenever they ate.

Maruthur admitted that he and his team had thought that the time-restricted group would lose more weight.

“But that didn’t happen. We didn’t see any difference in weight loss for those who ate most of their calories earlier than those who ate later in life. We also didn’t see any effect on blood pressure,” Maruthur said.

Researchers are currently gathering more detailed information on blood pressure logged over 24 hours, and they will gather this information with the results of studies on the effects of time-restricted feeding on blood sugar, insulin and other hormones.

“Together, these findings will help us to better understand the effects of time-restricted eating on cardiometabolic health,” he said.
