Waikiki, Oahu’s main tourist center, has not yet been hit by coronavirus, but after the first case of coronavirus was confirmed in Honolulu, Hawaii on Friday, A second unrelated case of coronavirus on Oahu was confirmed on Sunday. A Hawaiian resident suspected of testing positive for COVID-19, the Department of Health announced this afternoon, and is in serious condition in a hospital.
“The Ministry of Health has notified and is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,” the ministry said in a press release. “DOH will establish close contacts in Hawaii. Information is still being collected and the investigation is ongoing.
In a press conference, Governor Ige warned against all trips to Washington state. Washington state has had 17 fatal cases of coronavirus and has both direct and indirect air connections with the state of Hawaii. The governor said the elderly in particular should reconsider a trip to Washington or a visit to Aloha state.
A man who is currently in serious condition. He felt ill on March 2nd and returned to Honolulu from Seattle on March 4th. He immediately went to an emergency care facility on Oahu and was sent home. Today he was rushed by ambulance to an Oahu hospital that was diagnosed with COVID19 and is in serious condition.
Emergency care facilities are often poorly equipped and staffed to cope with such a situation. Better training is needed in Hawaii to avoid such a nightmare scenario. Failure to provide emergency care could open doors for even greater spread of the COVID 19 virus on the island of Oahu.
