Rijkswaterstaat fears that long traffic jams will occur again in the coming days due to the closure of the A2. The road will be completely closed between the Oudenrijn junction and the Everdingen junction in the coming days. “The advice is to avoid the (fast) road around Nieuwegein and Utrecht next Friday and the weekend,” according to Rijkswaterstaat.
Rijkswaterstaat is still busy with major maintenance on the A2 towards Den Bosch until 30 September. The A2 is completely closed in that direction for several weekends. The first weekend that the road was completely closed, there was a lot of inconvenience due to rain, accidents, rat runs and a lot of local traffic. In the municipality of Nieuwegein, extra measures have already been taken as a result.
The second weekend that the A2 is closed is now upon us and that is reason for Rijkswaterstaat to warn once again. The A2 is closed between the Oudenrijn junction and the Everdingen junction in the direction of Den Bosch from Thursday evening 22 August until Monday morning 26 August.
Rijkswaterstaat is calling on people to avoid the roads around Nieuwegein and Utrecht on Friday and during the weekend. “If possible, postpone your trip on those days.” People who do need to go on the road should follow the diversion route and not their navigation system.
Activities
According to Rijkswaterstaat, the asphalt on the A2 in the direction of Den Bosch has reached the end of its lifespan and is therefore now being replaced. Quieter asphalt is being replaced, the joints of a number of viaducts are being replaced and work is being carried out on the crash barriers. Finally, work is being carried out on the Jan Blankenbrug near Vianen.
In the first weekends, the A2 will be closed from Thursday evening 21:00, which means that traffic will also have to divert during the day on Friday. Next weekend, the section to Everdingen will be closed. In the weekend of 29 August to 2 September, this will concern the section to Vianen.
In addition to the daytime closures, there are eight nighttime closures. Furthermore, during the week, there are fewer lanes available both during the day and at night between the Oudenrijn junction and the Everdingen junction. The work will last until 30 September.
