Avoid Controversial Statements, Use the Language of the Heart

Sleman – Ahmad Syafii Maarif was reluctant to comment on the statement of the Minister of Religion Yaqut Cholil Qoumas (Gus Yaqut) who made an analogy between the noise of the call to prayer and the barking of a dog which has become a recent polemic.

However, the scholar, who is familiarly known as Buya Syafii, delivered a speech for the officials in general. Buya asked public officials to be more knowledgeable or prudent.

“Yes, the main thing is to build a culture of wisdom. Wisdom is important, use the language of the heart. Especially public officials, yes, so it doesn’t cause pros and cons, controversy, that’s all,” said Buya when met at his residence, Nogotirto, Gamping, Sleman, DIY, Friday (25 /2/2022).

According to the online version of Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI), arif meant by Buya is synonymous with wise, that is, always using his intellect (experience and knowledge). Wise also means clever and careful (careful and thorough) when facing difficulties and so on.

As previously reported, the Minister of Religion of Yaqut issued a circular that regulates the use of toa or loudspeakers in mosques and prayer rooms.

“Regarding the rules for the call to prayer, we have issued a regulatory circular. We do not prohibit mosques from using prayer prayers, no. Please. Because it is the symbol of Islam,” said the Minister of Religion at the Riau Province Regional Building, Wednesday (23/2).

“But this must be regulated how the speaker volume cannot be loud, 100 dB maximum. It is set when they can start using the speaker before and after the call to prayer. There is no prohibition,” Yaqut emphasized.

“The simplest thing is, if we live in a complex, for example. Left, right, front and back, all keep dogs. For example, barking at the same time, are we disturbed or not? What do these sounds mean? we arrange it so that it does not become a disturbance. Speakers in the mosques are welcome to use, but please arrange them so that they are not disturbed,” said Yaqut.

The Minister of Religion’s statement became a polemic. The Special Staff of the Minister of Religion, Nuruzzaman, then explained the Minister of Religion’s statement.

“The Minister of Religion does not at all compare the sound of the call to prayer to the sound of a dog. But the Minister of Religion is giving an example of the importance of regulating loudspeaker noise,” Nuruzzaman said in a video received detik.comThursday (24/2/2022).

Nuruzzaman said, during a working visit in Pekanbaru, Minister of Religion Yaqut answered questions related to the pros and cons of Circular Letter Number 05 of 2022.

“The Minister of Religion explained that in a pluralistic society, tolerance is needed, so a common guideline is needed so that a harmonious life is well maintained, including regulating loudspeaker noise, anything that can make you uncomfortable,” he said.
