Double bassist Avishai Cohen has often played in Toulouse, notably as part of the Jazz sur son 31 festival. He will be back in Halle aux grains on February 6, 2024, alongside pianist Makoto Ozone, at the invitation of the Great Performers. Which gives us time to discover “Iroko”, the latest album by the Israeli musician who, before Japan, was happily nourished by a stay in New York with singer and congas player Abraham Rodriguez Jr.
This unexpected duo (joined here by a great team of accomplice musicians) obviously gets along wonderfully in a Cuban Latin jazz register that is alternately tender and bouncy, both soul-pop (“It’s a man’s world”, cover of James Brown) and very Buena Vista Social Club (“Tintorera”). The ensemble rocks marvelously (“Avisale a mi vecina”, “Thunder drum”), between revisited traditional pieces and well-assembled standards (including a formidable “Exodus”, theme from the film of the same name, and the superb “Fly me to the moon”, popularized by Frank Sinatra).
Like its colorful cover, this 20th album by Avishai Cohen and his friend presenting himself as “a king of doowop-batarumba”, is an ideal travel companion for the summer.
