And first case of avian influenza has been detected at a bird in Essone. the virus has been detected on a buse variable found death on December 28, 2022 at Villebon-sur-Yvette. Consequently, the prefecture of Essonne indicated thesetting up a temporary control zone (ZCT)sur 110 municipalities in the department.

Preventing the appearance of the virus in farms

That zone de 20 km was defined around the place of discovery of the infected birds in order to avoid the spread of the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI) and to prevent its appearance on farms.

“This virus, which actively circulates in Europe through migratory birds or among native wildlife, is particularly contagious and pathogenic for birds”, indicates the prefecture of Essonne.

59 municipalities in the department had already been under surveillance since December 26 and the detection of avian influenza in two black-headed gulls found dead, at Lac de Créteil (Val-de-Marne).

Surveillance planned to last at least 21 days

This new temporary control area may be lifted after a period of 21 days if no sign suggestive of avian influenza is detected in the farms and if no new case has occurred in free-ranging wildlife in Essonne or in the neighboring departments.

Otherwise, it will be maintained until the situation stabilizes. The establishment of this ZCT involves the establishment of several measures and recommendations.

It is thus planned to shelter birds, a enhanced monitoring of farms through laboratory analyzes and adaptation of hunting activities (decoys of waterfowl and game birds).

Do not approach or feed wild birds

Citizens are also asked to do not approach or feed the birds wild and more particularly in the temporary control zone.

To prevent the spread of the virus to other birds, the general public must avoid frequenting wet areas (edges of ponds, pools and rivers) where wild birds are stationed, including in their absence, due to the possible presence of viruses in droppings and soiled soil.

“No risk for humans”

State services point out above all that the consumption of meat, foie gras and eggs or any poultry food product “presents no risk to humans”.

Finally, the prefecture points out that any wild bird mortality in this temporary control zone, without obvious cause, must be reported to the interdepartmental federation of hunters in Île-de-France and to the departmental branch of the French Office for Biodiversity.
