Avian flu has taken a big chunk out of the MOH’s sickness benefit budget – 2024-08-14 13:43:15

In the budget of the Ministry of Agriculture, funds are provided for compensation of animal breeders affected by animal diseases. Much of the resource that was available was used to compensate poultry farms affected by bird flu. Two-thirds of the bird population left. This was said today at the meeting of the Parliamentary Agricultural Committee by the Acting Minister of Agriculture, Georgi Tahov.

The meeting was convened with the sole topic: plague on small ruminants and what the veterinary authorities are doing to prevent the disease in our country.

Bird flu has depleted a significant part of the resource, the Minister of Agriculture admitted.

“There are funds, but I cannot commit, if the scale is large, that these funds will be sufficient,” he said very clearly.

Livestock compensation is one of the things that Georgi Takhov discussed with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Lyudmila Petkova. He has been assured that he can count on additional funds from the Finance Ministry if this calamity persists.

“What has not happened in these three months. I really pray that this does not happen to us,” Takhov said.
