More than half of the students and teachers of secondary schools in Suriname registered on Wednesday 12 January for the first day of school after the Christmas holidays. With this they respond to the call from the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture (MinOWC) to register normally. Of all schools, 70% of the students showed up at school. The group of registered teachers was around 80%.
Vocational education reports the highest attendances of the day. Many of those schools had 90% occupancy. VWO, HAVO and SMO have an average student turnout of 83%. At only two schools, half of the teaching staff was absent due to illness.
To measure attendance, the ministry instructed the school management to collect data on attendance, illness and absenteeism. The information was then sent to the VOS Inspectorate.
This information will be analyzed to determine the next steps. In addition, this information should also provide the MinOWC with insight into optimal continuation of education in this COVID situation.
