Avengers Endgame: The Origins of Rocket Teased in the Russo Brothers Movie

More than a year ago Avengers : Endgame came to conclude Phase 3 of the MCU in an epic way. If the Russo brothers’ film served as an epilogue, the latter would still have teased the origins of one of the most popular characters in the Marvel universe, namely Rocket. Having played a central role in Avengers : Endgame, this well-hung tongue raccoon had tried to bring back the missing superheroes, before taking off for new adventures alongside Peter Quill and Thor. A role that had convinced the audience, and that could take over since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 should focus more on the character, so much so that Rocket could be in danger of death. Indeed, its creator could be present in the film by James Gunn. Nevertheless, we could have already had some clues about the past of the character from Avengers : Endgame. If we still do not know a lot about him, we know that the latter experienced a terrible trauma when he underwent many experiments, this pushing him to often hide his emotions.

However, Avengers : Endgame would have subtly teased what fans can expect from the mysterious origins of Rocket in the third installment of Guardians of the Galaxy. More specifically, after their defeat against Thanos, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) so undernourished and back on Earth after having drifted into space for three weeks, catches up with what happened when it was gone. He asks questions to Thor (Chris Hemsworth) who silently ponders his colossal error as Rocket responds “he thinks he has failed, like everyone else.” Having not lost his impertinence, despite his physical weakness, Tony turns to Rocket comparing it to a toy for children (Build-A-Bear). Instead of refuting the accusation with his outspokenness, Rocket replied: “Maybe I am.” A joke that could mean much more than we think about Rocket’s past.

The comparison to a Build-A-Bear is not so fortuitous, since each customer has the opportunity to compose their own stuffed animal. In a way, it is reminiscent of what happened to Rocket. In Guardians of the Galaxy, we learned that the raccoon had been torn and then reassembled. Fans also saw scars, not to mention the cybernetic implants on its back – a physical reminder of how its creators essentially personalized it by experimenting and genetically modifying it. In any case, if the final remark of Rocket does not necessarily indicate a teasing vis-à-vis its origins, the fact remains that it will be interesting to learn more about the past of the character, especially since could bow out, several clues leading to Rocket’s death in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
