Blockbuster fans should be delighted, but not only. During the D23 World Convention Held during the weekend of August 10 in California, Disney made several announcements, particularly for the films Avatar et Star Wars, but also some of its successful franchises.
James Cameron, director ofAvatarannounced in person, Friday, August 9, the name (Fire and Ashes“Fire and Ash” in English) of the new installment of its science fiction franchise, whose release is not scheduled before December 2025.
“The new film is not what you expect. But it is definitely what you want,” promised the Canadian director. The two previous Avatar are among the three highest-grossing films of all time, with cumulative revenues of $5.2 billion.
Images from the new film, currently in production in New Zealand, show the iconic blue Na’vi characters, the indigenous people of the fictional planet Pandora, dancing around a campfire, but also images of giant floating ships and flying beasts. The fourth and fifth installments ofAvatar are planned for 2029 and 2031.
A new “Star Wars” film, seven years later
Another saga, Disney fans also had a first glimpse of Friday The Mandalorian and Grogu (The Mandalorian and Grogu, in French) scheduled for release in May 2026. Some images released show the famous green creature with long ears and his bounty hunter friend on a snowy planet.
This will be the first Star Wars Since L’Ascension de Skywalker in 2019. Disney, which until then produced a new Star Wars every year, has dramatically slowed the decline in revenues au box-office.
Still on the franchise Star Wars, but on the series side this time, the actor Jude Law will play a Jedi in Skeleton Crew, aired in December on the Disney+ streaming platform. Also present at the big Disney party in California, Jude Law promised a series “in the spirit of the coming-of-age films of the 1980s, such as The Goonies et E.T“.
Suites of great classics
On the cartoon side, Disney has unveiled a gargantuan program. First of all, a third part of the saga Frozen is expected to be released sometime in 2027. Disney Animation’s Jennifer Lee also confirmed that a fourth installment is in the works.
Until then, the entertainment giant is counting on Moana 2, which is scheduled for release on November 27. A trailer for the film was unveiled at the convention.
Pixar was also at the party at the D23 event. The studio announced the release of a fifth film Toy Story for summer 2026. This should stage the war between traditional toys and screens. Another expected new feature: The Incredibles 3, announced for 2027.
Finally, Disney has confirmed the arrival of new live action films: a new feature film Lilo and Stitch planned for 2025, Mufasa: The Lion King and a new adaptation of BSnow lance, for March 19, 2025.
