Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora Performance Comparison on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC: Analysis by Digital Foundry

Thomas Morgan from Digital Foundry decided to make a confrontation: test Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles in two performance modes, and at the same time compare versions with PC at maximum settings.

The younger Series S doesn’t have much to boast about. On the console there is only 30 FPS and dynamic resolution from 720 to 1080p. The overall picture quality has also been reduced compared to older versions.

  • PS5/Xbox Series X in “Quality” mode produces a resolution of 1296-1800p using FSR 2, which renders up to 4K; graphically the versions are identical

  • Higher consoles use ray tracing for global illumination and reflections

  • In “Quality” mode stable 30 FPS

  • Performance mode drops the resolution to 864-1260p from FSR 2; lower quality of geometry and overall saturation of details

  • Frame rate in Performance mode averages 50-55 FPS, display with VRR recommended

  • Versions Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora on Xbox Series X|S suffer from stuttering when moving around the world, there are also artifacts due to FSR 2

  • Morgan noted that Ubisoft Massive was able to bring the PC experience to consoles with smart compromises, and the Snowdrop engine once again showed excellent scalability

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora released on December 7 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
