Avalon Advanced Materials and Fort William First Nation to Develop Lithium Refinery in Canada

Avalon Advanced Materials (TSX: AVL) y Fort William First Nation signed a letter of intent to collaborate in the development of a materials refinery for batteries of lithium located on industrial land owned by FWFN in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.

In a press release, the groups said that the facility would be designed to accept mineral concentrates from lithium from Avalon’s Separation Rapids project and Rock Tech’s Georgia Lake project (TSX-V: RCK), as well as other mining operations in Northern Ontario. The goal is to produce hydroxide lithium and other materials for batteries lithium.

Construction is expected to begin in 2022, once the specific location is defined, the necessary permits and authorizations are in place, and the engineering studies, site preparation and construction design have been completed.

The anticipated initial design capacity will be to produce at least 15,000 tons per year of lithium and / or carbonate lithium, as well as sulfate of lithium, the chemical precursor to make carbonate or hydroxide.

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to create a new precedent of collaboration with indigenous companies to establish a supply chain of materials for batteries of lithium in northern Ontario “, said the president and CEO of Avalon, Don Bubar, in the press release.

“I share the vision of the head of FWFN, Peter Collins, on how this operation can inspire other indigenous companies to become future suppliers of mineral concentrates from lithium for the refinery and how FWFN can become the North Center for all First Nations communities in Northwest Ontario “, Bubar added.
