Italy from Lyon by train: possible but longer
The landslide that occurred on August 27 in Maurienne reshuffled the cards in terms of rail transport to and from Italy. Train traffic via Fréjus is suspended for a year. It is therefore impossible for SNCF trains to run between Saint-Michel de Maurienne and Modane. The Italian operator Trenitalia cannot provide the Paris-Lyon-Milan connection to Milan, as maintenance of its trains is carried out on the other side of the Alps.
So, how do you get to Italy from Lyon, without taking the car or bus? Although the plane option seems the simplest, it is still possible to travel to Italy by rail, provided you take your time.
