2022 terroir prize: The Old Inn 1900
The second address of the famous chef Georges Blanc in the shadow of his main restaurant. Here, in the “lemonade factory of 1900”, we eat a bourgeois meal with lobster pike quenelle, Bresse poultry with “Mère Blanc” cream, basmati rice, fresh frog legs sautéed in parsley “as in Dombes”. For those who have enough time, they also cook a whole Bresse chicken for two or four people. Beautiful interior in the style of the early 19th century.

Auberge Bressane
Glory and greatness of Bresse. At Jean-Pierre Vullin, the chickens come from Miéral and are prepared according to the rules of classic cuisine. Veal sweetbreads are served meunière, beef tournedos are Rossini or with pepper and Bresse chicken roasted on a spit accompanied by a potato gratin with Jura county or Jura savagnin, Bresse cream, mushrooms . Such cuisine cannot be cheap, but the market menu offers, for example, a Bresse salad, blond chicken liver, beech wood-smoked bacon bits, Bresse chicken on a spit, almond gratin with Comté du Jura or a tender old-fashioned calf’s head, shallot vinaigrette, ending with snow-covered eggs with pink pralines for a little less than 50 euros. Beautiful cellar, terrines and foie gras to take away.

Daniel and Denise
Lyon without Daniel and Denise? It has become unthinkable. This monument of Lyonnais cuisine, perpetrated by Joseph Viola (MOF) brings to life the whole range of scoundrel cuisine: pâté en crust, poached eggs, pike quenelle with Nantua sauce, priest’s omelette with crayfish, pistachio sausage, kidney of veal casserole and Bresse poultry with morels, all in a traditional Lyon “bouchon” setting. With starters around 17 euros, dishes for 20 euros and desserts for 8 euros, we’re still just below the 50 mark. Daniel and Denise offer several branches in Lyon, all of them are just as gourmet.
