Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region Ranks First in Cities & Villages Label for Quality of Life 2024

The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region has risen to first place among the regions where life is good! Annecy is the first local representative in the top 500 cities, while Lyon loses three places.

The Cities & Villages label where life is good has just revealed its ranking for 2024. And, surprise, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region is in first place on the podium, ahead of Occitanie and Nouvelle-Aquitaine. 425 municipalities in the region were distinguished. First place is occupied by Annecy, which gains two places and becomes the 5th city in the top 10 French municipalities in which to live well.

The leading trio is still made up of Angers, Bayonne and Biarritz. In terms of villages, it is another commune in Haute-Savoie which occupies first place for Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes: Marcellaz-Albanais.

Lyon in 80th place

Unfortunately, Lyon, the largest city in the region, lost three places this year and fell to 80th place, behind its rival, Saint-Etienne (32nd). Among municipalities with 100,000 inhabitants or more, the capital of Gaul is in 24th place out of 40.

Chambéry and Aurillac also climb into the top 50 of the 500 best cities.

The ranking is published by the Terres d’Optimismes association led by Thierry Saussez, former communications advisor to Nicolas Sarkozy. It allows eligible municipalities to be able to use the label for, for example, nearly 5,000 euros for municipalities with 50,000 inhabitants or more.
