Autumn Storms Shake the Netherlands: 5th Storm of the Year Hits

Nov 24, 2023 at 6:56 PM Update: 2 hours ago

The third autumn storm of this year is a fact. Wind force 9 was measured in IJmuiden on Friday between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM, which officially means a storm, Weeronline reports. It is the fifth storm of this year in total.

This fall it stormed earlier on November 2 and September 19. According to Weeronline, it is the first time since 2017 that it will storm three times in the autumn.

Earlier this year it stormed on July 5 and March 13. A storm exists if the average wind speed at at least one KNMI station over a full hour amounts to wind force 9.

Code yellow will be in effect in a large part of the country on Friday due to the stormy weather and very heavy gusts of wind. The heaviest wind gust so far was 118 kilometers per hour and was measured in Lauwersoog in Groningen. Wind force 10 was even measured there for a short time, but there was no official storm.

The Zuiderzeeland water board in Flevoland introduced limited dike monitoring earlier on Friday. This happened due to the high water level in the IJsselmeer in combination with stormy winds.

According to the water board, the water level in the IJsselmeer is almost 80 centimeters higher than normal. Inspectors therefore keep a close eye on the dikes between Lemmer and Urk and the northern part of the Houtrib locks near Lelystad up to the Reeves lock near Dronten. If the water level rises further, measures will be taken.
