Autumn holidays: in Liège, beatbox and symphonic music coexist in harmony, during a family concert

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège never lacks ideas to conquer new audiences. As evidenced by the meeting he sets for us this Sunday, October 20, entitled Beatbox to the orchestra.

When beatbox meets classic

The beatboxit is the art of making music solely with one’s mouth, in particular by imitating the sound of percussion, by simultaneously producing melody and rhythm. We readily associate this technique with rap and hip-hop, but little with classical music. Except at the Liège Philharmonic Hall where two high-flying beatboxers are expected this Sunday, October 20 as part of the Family Sundays.

These two beatboxers are on the one hand Airflow, who has already worked with the OPRL last year during educational shows, and FootboxG, a young Belgian beatboxer in his twenties, the first Belgian to win the prestigious title of world champion in his discipline.

Although they both practice beatboxing, the techniques of Airflow and FootboxG are completely different. Airflow integrates into its work He continuesa vocal practice from traditional South Indian music and which is based on onomatopoeia, while FootboxG uses, for example, loopers, which allow it to rebroadcast sounds that it has just recorded live. This Sunday’s concert will therefore be very rich in terms of sound.

But how will they mingle with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège?

Airflow and Fanny Gouville, who works on OPRL educational projects, chose music known to children like Star Wars or Pirates of the Caribbean and then pieces which are less known but which are very rich rhythmically.

The public will be able to discover how we put beatbox on existing music. Among the composers who will have their works arranged during the evening are Rossini, Gershwin, Mancini, Hagen, Richard Sherman, Hans Zimmer, John Williams and Gustav Holst.

A battle between the orchestra and the public

During the concert, the audience will also have their role to play. We are promised a battle between the orchestra and the public with fairly simple sounds.

In addition, a preparatory workshop for children, organized and given by the two beatboxers, is organized on Sunday at 2:30 p.m., before the concert and is aimed at 6-9 year olds.

Everyone will be amazed by it. Meet for an atypical Sunday with the OPRL, Airflow & FootboxGthis Sunday, October 20 at the Liège Philharmonic Hall.

The concert is at 4 p.m., and the workshop for 6-9 year olds starts at 2:30 p.m. Don’t delay in booking on the OPRL website, there are only a few places left.
