For several decades, the Union of Artists of Latvia has been holding an autumn exhibition, which gathers a rich range of works of art. This year, more than 80 works can be viewed together, all of which are united by a kind of reflection on the shadow created by the war over the world and the broken destinies of people.
Igors Dobičins, the chairman of the Union of Artists of Latvia, notes: “We are probably witnessing another episode of Livonia’s history, when the humanistic ideals established in the 18th century are crumbling. The media shows manhunts. Alongside the “Kepa uz serds” plot, there is a manhunt on the battlefield, which for our circle is absolutely European unacceptable. In addition, the summary of the entire long title would be a question for the artist – what happens to the sense of humanity, where is humanity?”
Works of painting, graphics, sculpture and textile art have been selected for the exhibition. Along with the works of experienced artists, the works of young artists are exhibited.
The chairman of the Union says: “Current art practice shows such symptoms that a young artist, after graduating from university, says that he hates everything. He hates the bright halls, he hates the questions of television and radio representatives. We create in cooperation with Rosenthal Art School teacher Baiba Gusti such a bridge. To try, as it is, to exist in the light of reporters, to exist in a lighted room, to exist in exposure with others.”
The organizers of the exhibition awarded two prizes. Sculptor Emīls Kristiāns Muzikants received the opportunity to hold a personal exhibition in the gallery of the Union of Artists. He says about his work: “Its main idea is about eternal development. It’s a springboard that we start from this old value, which in this case is a very old oak bark. At the same time, we use it not only as a springboard, but we also we take something with us. So to speak, we also take with us some information or experience from the past.”
On the other hand, the award for lifetime contribution went to the artist Andris Biezbārdis, who in his work refers to the unimaginably harsh conditions during the war in Ukraine. The artist says: “I found the idea that I could take something from the theme of this war. These airstrikes appear in the work, which are related to drones, which I have sketched a little. In this way, creating a story about this theme of war – about insecurity, about fear, and the work itself was also called “Fear”.
Creative activity is inspired by the desire to prove oneself among other artists, but the search for fresh ideas is encouraged by the new colleagues met at the exhibition. “New faces are coming in. The age shows the search of young people, their thinking, the manner of showing. The old people have to run along a bit,” admits Andris Biezbārdis.
The exhibition will be open until January 14.
