Original title: Autumn wind blows, be alert to children with rotavirus diarrhea
After “coming out”, the feeling of stuffy weather gradually dissipated, the temperature difference between day and night gradually increased, and summer began to transition into autumn in a real sense. The WeChat official account of Yunnan CDC issued a reminder to be alert to children with rotavirus diarrhea.
Rotavirus (RV), referred to as RV, is the main cause of severe diarrhea in infants and young children. The main route of transmission is the fecal-oral route, and it can also be transmitted through close contact or through the respiratory tract. Autumn and winter are the peak seasons of epidemics. Rotaviruses are divided into eight groups, namely A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H. Among them, group A is the most common one, and 90% of cases are caused by it.
Because the gastrointestinal tract of infants is immature and their defense capabilities are weak, they are vulnerable to rotavirus attacks. Group A rotavirus is one of the most important pathogens causing severe diarrhea in infants and young children worldwide, and one of the leading causes of death among children under 5 years old in developing countries. Almost all children under 5 years of age have been infected at least once.
The onset of the disease is acute, and the main clinical manifestation is diarrhea. The stool is egg-like or watery, and there may be a small amount of mucus, no pus and blood, and no foul smell. Most of them are accompanied by fever and vomiting. Some children with severe diarrhea are prone to complications such as dehydration, acidosis, and electrolyte imbalance.
Rotavirus diarrhea is a self-limiting disease, which usually resolves itself within a week or so. There is no specific medicine for this disease. Parents must not blindly give their children antibiotics (except for those with bacterial infections), nor should they blindly use antiemetic or antidiarrheal drugs. Children with severe diarrhea and dehydration symptoms should go to the hospital for diagnosis and treatment in time. (Reporter Qiao Yeqiong)
