The world in general and the world of Formula 1 in particular have changed dramatically since March, when the Australian Grand Prix was canceled at the last minute.
The Covid-19 pandemic forced F1 to rethink its model. Sunday, the 2020 season will start under the aegis of the “Pitlane Project”, with enormous sanitary constraints which will prohibit any spectator or any guest in the paddock.
At the same time, in the past five weeks, the Black Lives Matter movement has experienced a new boom following the death of George Floyd. Among other personalities, Lewis Hamilton was particularly involved. The pilot has just announced the creation of the Hamilton Commission, which will explore ways in which motorsport could encourage young black people to take up engineering careers.
“End racism” on the halo of cars
Within the Mercedes team, it was found that minorities were not much represented among the 1,500 employees of the team. “Only 3% of our employees are from ethnic minorities, and only 12% are women,” said the team’s statement released Monday morning.
In addition to looking for ways to integrate more blacks in F1, the team will compete in the 2020 season with an all-black single-seater. The words “End racism” will also appear on the halo of the cars.
