The legality of the goal is currently being checked in a video examining whether the player has not been in the back position.

“I think the automatic back-positioning will be ready by 2022,” 71-year-old Vengers, better known as former London Arsenal coach and now FIFA, is responsible for global football development, told Living Football.

“The automated system means that the signal goes directly to the line judge, and a red light on the clock lights up, indicating the back,” he explains. “Right now, we need to look at the lines where players are located to tell if they’re in the back,” says Vengers.

“The average time we have to wait to make a decision is about 70 seconds, but it can also be a minute and 20 seconds, sometimes even a little longer when the situation is difficult to assess,” he explains. “It’s so important because we see that many goal-setting celebrations are being canceled after such videos. That’s why I think it’s a very important step.”

The World Cup in Qatar is scheduled for November 21, 2022 to December 18, 2022.
