Autoimmune sufferers cannot take immunostimulants carelessly

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Autoimmune expert and Chairman of the Indonesian Immunology Allergy Association Prof. Iris Rengganis said that autoimmune sufferers cannot take immunostimulants carelessly because they will activate the antibodies in question and can result in attacking the body itself.

“It is good to activate antibodies, but in autoimmune sufferers, the antibodies are disturbed (error) so that they can attack the body itself,” he said, during an online discussion with the theme of myths about autoimmunity which was monitored in Jakarta, Monday.

Immunostimulants or immunostimulators are substances in the form of drugs and nutrients that stimulate the immune system by increasing the activity of immune system components to fight infection and disease.

He warned not to let autoimmune sufferers take immunostimulants then have good immunity and antibodies, but instead attack the patient’s body.

So, he said, autoimmune patients should not be given immunostimulants, but enough with vitamins A, B, C, D, E, antioxidants and healthy eating. In addition, there may also be some immunomodulations, but not immunostimulators.

Regarding what autoimmune survivors can do to prepare the immune system, he explained that this can be done by building good communication with the treating doctor.

In other words, don’t stop routine medication without your doctor’s approval. Then also communicate with the doctor regarding the routine treatment schedule.

This includes treatment during the COVID-19 period so that it can minimize direct meetings and utilize telemedicine.

At this time, he suggested that autoimmune sufferers should just stay at home. For those who are still taking medication, it is advisable to drink eight glasses of water a day.

Furthermore, consuming fruits and vegetables every day, especially those rich in vitamin C, not smoking and not drinking alcohol and doing regular exercise for 30 minutes per day.

“Take vitamins, especially C and D, supplements and regular medication,” he said.

Regarding vaccination, he said it was specifically given to people who are not autoimmune. For autoimmune sufferers are not vaccinated because it can cause antibodies that attack the body itself. *
