Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam ranked 4th in Southeast Asia for the number of cars sold in 2020, while Thailand and Indonesia were the top podium markets, according to the ASEAN Automotive Federation (AAF).
In 2020, eight markets in the Southeast Asia region – Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam – reported a total sales volume of 2.45 million vehicles of all types, including buses and cars, a decrease of 29% compared to 2019.
Thailand led the way in sales with 792,100 vehicles of all types sold, -29% year-on-year.
With the exception of Brunei, all of the other seven markets have experienced a drop in sales due to the Covidian health crisis.
However, thanks to the good response to the epidemic and the establishment of timely support policies for the domestic auto industry, the number of automobiles and buses marketed in Vietnam has fallen by only 8% – the lowest level among the others.
In particular, Vietnam surprised not only Southeast Asia but the whole world when its car brand VinFast announced that three new models of electric cars could be sold in the United States this year. If successful, this plan could help Vietnam become a “formidable” market within the region’s auto industry.-CPV / VNA
