Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) – Despite all efforts to make greater use of local public transport, the number of cars in Frankfurt continued to increase last year. At the turn of the year, around 342,430 cars were registered in Hesse’s largest city, as industry expert Ferdinand Dudenhöffer found in an analysis of data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority and the Federal Statistical Office. This corresponds to an increase of almost 2,140 vehicles compared to the previous year. The urban car density per 1000 inhabitants increased slightly from 449 to 452 in the course of the first Corona year.

“The trend” away from the car “, which is often claimed, cannot be seen”, Dudenhöffer interprets the results. Across Germany, the number of cars also increased in 22 of the 25 cities analyzed – most of all in Bochum. Only in Wolfsburg, Ingolstadt and Munich, where the headquarters of Volkswagen, Audi and BMW are located, did the stock decline. The assumption for the opposite trend there: Numerous company cars were withdrawn from use for a short time because many senior executives of the carmaker worked from the home office.
