Auto exports rise 1.68% in August: Inegi

Mexico City., In August, light vehicle exports amounted to 292,670 units, a figure that not only translated into a growth of 1.68 percent compared to the same month last year, but also an upturn after the fall observed in the seventh month of 2024, according to data published this Friday by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

According to information from the Administrative Registry of the Light Vehicle Automotive Industry for the eighth month of this year, in the reference period the country’s automobile sales abroad increased by 5.75 percent compared to the 271,469 units reported in July.

However, the annual growth rate in August stood out after the exports of this industry, which is the most important in the country, fell by 1.56 percent in the seventh month. In other words, the country’s main export sector resumed its growth trend.

General Motors was the brand that saw its sales grow 28.8 percent annually, while BMW’s exports fell 52.4 percent.

Between January and August of this year, sales of units abroad totaled more than 2 million 275 thousand, a figure that showed an increase of 7.37 percent compared to the 2 million 119 thousand observed in the same period of 2023.

Light vehicle production in Mexico was 352,515 units in the eighth month of 2024, a figure that translated into an increase of 8.27 percent compared to the 325,683 vehicles reported in the same period last year.

The data for the reference period represented an increase of 16.64 percent compared to July, when this sector produced 302,309 cars. This result reflected a greater dynamism in the manufacture of cars in the country.

The biggest advance was by Ford with 40.4 percent at an annual rate while BMW production fell 19.2 percent compared to August 2023.

Between January and August of this year, the automotive industry produced more than 2 million 261 thousand light vehicles, a figure that showed an increase of 5.33 percent compared to the 2 million 516 thousand cars reported in the same period last year.
