A black September for the car, with a drop in registrations of 32.7% on the same month of 2020 and a market strongly conditioned by the production difficulties of the sector, which after the summer break resumed production in fits and starts due to the shortage of microchips . A result that represents an alarm bell in an economic phase characterized by the rebound of the main indicators, in which the automotive sector instead sees a worsening performance and prospects.
The braking in September
The figure for last September marks an important slowdown also compared to the result of the same month of 2019, -26.2%, with Unrae, the association of foreign car manufacturers, which highlights how the overall figure for the nine months indicates an overall loss of over 300 thousand vehicles, with a decrease of 20.6% compared to the same period in 2019.

The decline despite the incentives
The loss of a third of sales on the Italian market in September, year on year, corresponding to about 50 thousand fewer cars, was recorded, points out the Centro Studi Promotor, “despite the fact that from 2 August they were back into force, thanks to a new allocation of funds, incentives for the most requested cars, those with emissions between 61 and 135 grams of CO2 per kilometer ».
Component crisis
The reduction in microprocessor production programs by Asian players and the simultaneous growth in demand for components in the electronics sector – laptops, tablets and smartphones – weighed on the complex production chain in the automotive sector in the wake of the pandemic. A mechanism that has blown a delicate balance, penalizing the supply of microchips destined for the automotive sector, with production stops all over the world.
Tesla on the rise
During the month, the sales of the main brands remained in negative ground, with only a few exceptions such as Tesla (from one thousand to almost 1,500 units sold in September 2021 over the year before), Land Rover, which grew by 15% but always on limited volumes, alongside Kia, Dr and Hyundai. Since the beginning of the year, on the other hand, all the brands have managed to maintain, in the period January-September, a positive result on 2020 thanks to the recoveries of the past months. Here too, however, there are exceptions: Alfa Romeo, which loses 27% of registrations in one year, and Renault, which leaves behind about 1% of sales.
