The last session held by the executive commission of the Urban Planning Management of the Seville City Council has included the approval of a license for conservation works in the San José de las Carmelitas Descalzas convent, located on Santa Teresa street in the Santa Cruz neighborhood. and whose construction dates back to the year 1575, being a monument protected as an asset of cultural interest (BIC).
According to the agreement adopted on July 29 and collected by Europa Press, a “license for conservation and maintenance works has been approved, consisting of the specific repair of cladding on the exterior facade of Doncellas street of the San José de las Convent. Discalced Carmelites “.
The enclosure of this convent contains a diversity of styles and chronologies as a result of the process of incorporation of the houses that were the protagonists of the founding stage and of the different construction stages promoted by the reforms, adaptation and incorporation of the new building, with two clearly differentiated spaces: the church and the conventual dependencies.
The church, located to the left of the convent’s dependencies, has the façade at the foot of the nave where its main portal opens, which is made up of a lintel span inserted in a narrow arch that rests on two corbels. with anthropomorphic faces and on which there is a roof tile, with a wooden structure and covered with tiles, which is supported on the wall by means of wrought iron struts.
WALL PAINTINGS
Under it there are wall paintings with themes alluding to Carmel: The Immaculate Conception between nuns of the Order, Saint Joseph and Saint Teresa and two plates with the symbol of Saint Elias, the flaming sword and the open book, the shield of the Carmelite Order and the figure of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove between the heads of cherubs, which must have been made around 1635.
The main portal of the convent, located to the right of the church, is a simple lintel composition decorated only with a wall painting, located on the lintel and included in a plate held by figures of angels, in which the shield is represented. of the Carmelite Order, and on which there is a small window protected by wrought iron fittings.
WAXED WALLS
In the rest of the facades that make up the complex, the common scheme of the conventual type is followed, whitewashed walls and few openings, with some millstones embedded in the lower part remaining visible.
In all the walls, the plinths contrasting in almagra color stand out, as well as the few existing construction elements, such as the cornice line of the first and second body or some small window protected with ironwork, and only some isolated decorative element, such as the small altarpiece. of tiles with the portrait of Santa Teresa de Jesús, a copy of that of Fray Juan de las Miserias, which can be found in the break in the wall of the lateral façade.
