Authorities Using Drones, Helicopters, and Boats to Patrol Long Island Beaches for Sharks

Authorities on Long Island (New York) are using drones, helicopters and boats to patrol its beaches after this week four cases of non-fatal bites of sharks and that 50 were located sharks sandfish, often found in warm or temperate waters and so named for their tendency to migrate to inshore habitats.

The group of sand sharks was located Tuesday by a drone the same day that two 15-year-old teenagers and two adults were bitten while swimming on different Long Island beaches, the media reported.

A fifth case was also reported on Tuesday and according to authorities the knee lacerations were caused by “a large marine animal” believed to be a shark.

One of the towns on alert for the presence of sharks is Hempsteadwhich reported that they plan to use more dronesjet skis and boats to patrol the waters to track the sharks.

Beach lifeguards will be trained to identify shark dorsal finsthe presence of sharks and his swimming pattern.

Police urged the public to continue enjoying the beach but asked the swimmers to be attentive to the sharks as well as groups of fish that can attract them.

Last year there were also reported several cases of non-fatal bites which forced the closure of several beaches on Long Island.
