After the derailment was recorded of a train transporting oil on the afternoon of Saturday, April 13 in the province of Sancti Spíritusdirectors of the Cuban Railway Union issued a statement in which they ruled out that it had been an act of sabotage or vandalism, one of the versions that gained the most strength on social networks.
Likewise, through an official statement, officials assured that there was no oil spill, although they acknowledged that at the beginning of the derailment there were small leaks in some of the cars, since their covers lost a few screws.
Mijail Bonachea Crespo, director of the Sergio Soto Refinery in Cabaiguán, told the official radio station Radio Sancti Spíritus that these leaks were controlled.
“New screws were immediately put in and all the lids were retightened to prevent the product from spilling, since yesterday there has been no spill,” he declared.
Likewise, the official indicated that, in order to remove all the oil from the train, specialized cutting and welding would need to be carried out, this with a team “that is in charge of this type of work and does it with the product inside while hot.”
Boachea indicated that the specialists were not in any of the provinces near the accident, so they were waiting for them to arrive from Santiago de Cuba.
“As soon as they arrive, the work will begin that will then allow the product that is inside the tank car to be evacuated. After extraction we take it to the Refinery to process it,” he added.
The aforementioned state media also indicated that work to restore the damaged section had already begun this Sunday, April 14.
