Authorities investigate an attack against a student in Quetzaltenango; possible gang conflict

The authorities confirmed an armed attack that took place in the gym of the town of Colomba Costa Cuca, Quetzaltenango. A 15-year-old student was shot in the head while attending classes there, as his institution was being remodeled by the Co-op.

At a press conference, said the Minister of the Interior, Francisco Jiménez, together with the director of the White House National Civil Police (PNC), David Custodio Boteo, assured that this fact will not go unpunished. Jiménez said that they have intensified the search for the person responsible and that the PNC is following several leads to clarify the attack.

Custodio said that five buildings have been surrounded by representatives of the Special Criminal Investigation Department (DEIC), which cooperates with the Ministry of the Public in the raids. The minister also announced the transfer of the Special Group Against Extortion (GECE) to Colombia’s Costa Cuca, as one of the measures to combat crime in the city.

The GECE is a PNC unit that patrols the streets after inspections to combat extortion, a growing problem in the area.

Possible conflicts between groups at the beginning of the attack

The PNC leader said that orders have already been issued to find and arrest the person responsible for the attack, who, according to initial investigations, would also be a minor. Although no further information has been released yet, it is assumed that the incident is related to a conflict between groups.

The injured teenager was taken to hospital in critical condition. His health is delicate, and the authorities have not given more information about his evolution. [Tomado de AGN]
