Authorities in Ghana Launch Manhunt for 300-Year-Old Kola Tree Vandals

Authorities in Ghana have launched a manhunt for the people who felled a famous 300-year-old kola tree. That writes BBC News. The tree is thought to have healing powers.

The tree dates back to the Ashanti Kingdom, part of modern-day Ghana. According to people from the region, the tree grew on the spot where the famous priest Okomfo Anokye spat a kola nut on the ground in the early eighteenth century. It is believed that the black and white seeds of the kola tree can cure ailments and curses.

As soon as photos of the felled tree circulated online, Ghanaians expressed their outrage. Previously, the tree was spared when a road was built, partly because it was a tourist attraction for Ghanaians and foreign tourists.

It is unclear why the tree was cut down.
