US authorities have captured a black bear that broke into 21 homes in California. They had been looking for the bear for over a year, nicknamed ‘Hank the Tank’ because of its remarkably large stature.
Hank the Tank became known for her striking method of breaking in: with her large body she forced doors and windows of several houses in the Lake Tahoe region. Once inside the house, she took off with the food.
As a result, Hank the Tank grew into an even bigger bear of no less than 227 kilos. In comparison, female black bears average between 40 and 180 pounds.
At first, Hank the Tank was thought to be a male bear. She was also linked to 40 burglaries that have taken place since 2022. But after DNA research it appears that she can be linked ‘only’ to 21 burglaries. The other break-ins are the work of at least two other hungry bears.
The US authorities announced on Friday that biologists have “safely immobilized” the bear. She is now going to a shelter in Colorado. The authorities thought that was the best solution, given the “widespread interest” in the bear and the risk of a “serious incident”.
Her three puppies are going to another shelter in California. The authorities hope that they can unlearn the “negative behavior” they inherited from their kleptomaniac mother.
