Author Bridgerton Books Welcomes Diversity In Netflix Film Adaptation | NOW

Julia Quinn, the author of the Bridgertonbook series, the first part of which was recently filmed by Netflix, is happy with the different ethnicities that can be seen in the series. In the books, the characters are white, but producer Shonda Rhimes has chosen to have many characters played by actors of color.

“I think that’s a great idea,” Quinn said in a conversation with Tuesday The Guardian. “I’ve been criticized before by people who thought this was not historically accurate. They asked, ‘If you change the characters, are you denying things that actually happened?’ But you know, this is romantic fiction. It’s much more important to show as many types of people as possible. So I think the creators made the right choice by bringing so much diversity. “

In Bridgerton, which has been on Netflix since the end of December, various roles are played by non-white actors. For example, the characters Duke Simon Basset and his aunt are played by actors Regé-Jean Page and Adjoa Andoh. Page is from Zimbabwe, Andoh is of Ghanaian descent.

The costume drama revolves around the Bridgerton and Featherington families, for whom a suitable marriage partner is sought for the daughters. The series is a huge success and Netflix announced that Bridgerton was viewed by more than 63 million households in the first week after the premiere.

Quinn wrote eight in all Bridgertonbooks, the first five of which have been published in Dutch. Maker Chris Van Dusen already hinted that he wanted to film all the books.
