Authentication via WhatsApp and 5 more tips to keep your Instagram safe – 07/14/2021

Instagram announced the arrival of a new feature thinking about user safety. From now on, the social network will have a new two-step authentication method, and people will be able to use WhatsApp to receive codes to release access to the social network — the option to receive the numbers via SMS remains activated.

“In the coming weeks, who will use the WhatsApp will be able to secure the account with the WhatsApp phone number,” Instagram said in a statement, noting that the feature will be available in some countries.

How to use

To activate the new feature, go to “Settings” -> “Security”. Then click on “Two Factor Authentication”.

By doing this, you will be able to choose between three options to receive the codes: “authentication application”, “WhatsApp” and “SMS”.

When choosing to receive via WhatsApp, you must enter your phone number and then enter the code you arrive at.

You will initially receive the code by SMS and then you will have to confirm your phone number for the new numbers to arrive on WhatsApp.

To disable the feature, just go back to the Settings menu, uncheck the “WhatsApp” option and click on “Disable”. Then you must also disable the use of second factor authentication via SMS.

Security Check

In addition to the second security factor via WhatsApp, the social network has launched a feature called Security Check, which promises to “help people keep their accounts safe from intruders (hacking).”

According to Instagram, this new feature will guide people through steps necessary to keep the app secure, including verifying login activity, reviewing profile information, and requesting an update of contact information for account recovery — such as phone number or email.

Instagram also posted the key steps people should take to keep their accounts secure. In addition to asking users to activate the second authentication factor, the social network highlights the following steps to keep accounts secure:

  • Update your phone number and email
  • Remember that Instagram does not communicate with users through Direct
  • To check if Instagram has tried to contact you, go to “Settings”, “Security” and “Instagram Emails”
  • Report content and accounts you find suspicious
  • Enable Login Request
