The 49 arrests made during a coordinated police operation at the School of Positive Sciences in AUTH yesterday afternoon after a complaint about causing damage outside the library under construction, in the former occupation of the Biological.
The arrested persons were taken in the morning under strong security measures to the courts of Thessaloniki, where the public prosecutor brought criminal proceedings against them for seriously disrupting the smooth functioning of a legal entity under public law and, in addition, for disobedience, because they refused to submit to a dactyloscopic examination (48 of the 49).
The defendants remain in custody and will be brought back to court tomorrow, Clean Monday, to be tried by the automatic procedure. Among them are 31 men and 18 women, aged between 19 and 30 years.
Regarding the items seized during the same operation, such as nautical torches, wooden poles, anti-suffocation masks, fire extinguishers, sledgehammers, etc., the Police investigation continues to identify the perpetrators and a separate case file is being filed for violation of the law about weapons and flares.
In the meantime, people gathered early outside the courts shouting slogans of support for the 49 arrested.
According to an announcement by the AUTH Physics Student Association, the invasion of the MAT on the university premises took place while a “reappropriation of the space on the plane tree of the school” event was in progress with drinks and food, when a platoon of the MAT and EKAM appeared.
According to the Police, the operation was carried out after a call according to which unknown persons tried to cause damage to the library under construction, in the area of the former occupation of the Biologikos. A claim, however, that the students deny.

Teachers were also present at the scene yesterday, as with their presence they wanted to ensure as peaceful a police operation as possible, but, as they complained, they themselves were intimidated.
“The general police director told us that the rector informed him that there was an attempt to break into the school, we did not find anything like that for the biological school where the complaint was made,” said Dimitris Raptakis, professor of the civil engineering department of AUTH.
“We asked for a prosecutor, for an hour and we were three meters from the door where the arraignments took place. We were there for three minutes, and no prosecutor showed up. We ask that the MAT leave now, there is no reason for their presence, since according to their own statements, the process has been completed and we have seen that the arrests have also been completed”, as stated by .G. Iliopoulos, member of the presidium of the AUTH professors’ association.
The operation was carried out by police officers of the State Security Sub-Directorate of the Thessaloniki Security Directorate with the assistance of members of the Crime Prevention and Suppression Teams (OPKE) and ACTION of the same Directorate, the Directorates of Police Operations, Direct Action, Police and Traffic , as well as the Sub-Directorate of Criminal Investigations of Northern Greece.
As part of the operation, according to an announcement by the General Police Directorate of Thessaloniki, a total of 49 people were brought in and arrested, while 22 wooden poles were found and confiscated, to the ends of which pieces of cloth were attached, 12 anti-suffocation masks, 11 fire extinguishers, containing paint, four pyrotechnic structures (naval torch type), one metal iron cutter, two metal cutting wheels.
Also located and seized were two cutting discs, a metal wheel wrench, a sledgehammer, six bike helmets, two activated police hand grenades (flash and tear gas), a laptop computer, clothing items (gloves, balaclavas) and a number of door locks and chains .
A preliminary investigation is carried out by the State Security Sub-Directorate of the Thessaloniki Security Directorate.
